Interview
Rebekka Bay’s top five picks in Copenahgen

As Marimekko landed in Copenhagen for fashion week, we spoke to local Rebekka Bay, creative director of the Finnish brand about her favourite spots in the Danish capital. Bay leads Marimekko’s design strategy for fashion, bags, accessories and home products. Under her direction, Marimekko has simultaneously modernised its collections, silhouettes and prints, and built a relationship to its rich heritage and print archive.
Copenhagen is not only bicycle-friendly, but also a super walkable city

Bay lives in the older part of Copenhagen, “in an old drying loft, in the backyard,” she says. She’s a five minutes walking distance of where she works, the Marimekko store and upstairs studio in Pilestræde 29.

Dronningegården
A modernist residential complex, designed by Danish architect Kay Fisker in the 1950s. A notable example of Nordic functionalism.

Apollo Bar
Chef Frederik Bille Brahe’s Apollo Bar, inside Kunsthal Charlottenborg, continues to be a favourite. In addition to Frederik’s cooking, he has a great ability to host, whether for breakfast, a drink in the courtyard space outside, or for dinner.
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is also home to the Royal Art Academy, the city’s best courtyard and CHART art fair in August.

Locale 21
This is my go-to for weeknight pasta. My local trattoria – I recommend sitting at the bar counter for dinner
“It is a city where you can swim in the harbour year-round, pick up exceptionally good bread from most bakeries and eat high quality food at reasonable prices. It is a city where nature is never more than a bus or train ride away.”

Studio x Kitchen
This cafe is so much more than folded eggs, even though they are incredible.
Studio x Kitchen is a great collaborator, whether with artists, ceramicists, glass makers or other food providers, from Psyche Organic Olive Oil to Kala’s Kimchi.

Kongens Have (The Kings Garden)
Whenever I am in need of a reminder of the season – snow, cherry blossoms, the roses in bloom or changing colours of the leaves – I head to Kongens Have. Head here for brisk walking or a spot to soak up the sun in summer. It is the perfect retreat in the middle of the city.
