Following its acclaimed debut at the Barbican – in London – last year, Rain Room, designed by UK-based collective rAndom International, has made it to The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The piece is on loan courtesy of RH, Restoration Hardware, and is the first artwork in the collection of RH Contemporary Art, the new arts platform that RH is launching this fall. A field of falling water that pauses wherever a human body is detected, Rain Room offers visitors the experience of controlling the rain. Last Friday evening, RH and Camron invited a select group of New Yorkers to a sneak peek at the immersive environment, with interventions by dancers from Wayne McGregor Company. Bill Cunningham, the legendary New York Times fashion photographer, lingered with his camera to his eye, capturing guests as they danced and tip-toed in the rain. But it wasn’t just a fun party. Rain Room is also meant to make us reimagine our relationships with environments. Leslie Camhi on Vogue.com, wrote: “While the Rain Room clearly addresses our fantasies of controlling the weather, the questions it raises are also broadly existential. When we can no longer reach out and touch the rain, feel its wetness on our palms or cheeks, what kind of community is possible?”
